Step by Step

During this activity, you’ll have the opportunity , over the course of around 5 hours, to explore the cities of Naples and Pompeii. Throughout the tour, you’ll be accompanied by an expert guide, who will help you learn about the history and architecture of these two sites in southern Italy.

Naples is the largest city in southern Italy. Over the centuries, the city has been ruled by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Spaniards and Italians, a fact reflected in its rich history, art and culture. Since 1995, the historic centre of Naples has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Some of the main sights you’ll visit in Naples are as follows:

  • Piazza del Plebiscito: This square is situated in the heart of the city. Here you’ll find some of Naples’ most important buildings, such as the Royal Palace, the Basilica of Saint Francis of Paola, the Prefecture Palace and the Salerno Palace
  • The Royal Palace: Built in the early 17th century, it was home to the city’s leading rulers, including kings from the Houses of Habsburg, Bourbon and Savoy. It is currently home to the National Library of Naples, the third-largest national library in Italy.
  • Naples Cathedral: Constructionbegan in the early 14th century. It was built on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to the worship of the god Apollo. Inside, it houses the oldest baptistery in the entire Western world.
  • The Posillipo District: One of Naples’ oldest neighbourhoods, already documented by the ancient Greeks. From Posillipo, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Bay of Naples, bathed by the Tyrrhenian Sea

After visiting Naples, you’ll continue the tour to the archaeological site of Pompeii. Pompeii is famous for having been destroyed following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Buried under ash, the city remained frozen in time, and is today the best-preserved cultural and archaeological heritage site in the world. As you stroll through the streets of Pompeii, you’ll discover what daily life was like in ancient Roman times.

The places you’ll visit in Pompeii include the following:

  • Pompeii Forum: This was the centre of civic and commercial life in Pompeii. It was accessed through a large bronze gate, beyond which carriages were not permitted
  • Temple of Jupiter: The temple was built in the 2nd century BC in honour of the god Jupiter, the most important figure in Roman mythology. It was damaged by the earthquake of 62 AD and was undergoing restoration at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius
  • Lupanar: The city’s brothel, known for the erotic paintings on its walls. ‘Lupanar’ was the Latin word used to describe this type of building. It derives from ‘lupa’, which in Latin means ‘she-wolf’ – the name given to prostitutes in Ancient Rome
  • Temple of Apollo: It is situated within an area enclosed by 48 columns. This temple was dedicated to Apollo, known, amongst other things, as the god of the Sun

A tour of a city that has remained intact for 2,000 years, allowing you to stroll through its streets and discover the secrets and curiosities it holds.

The guide knew a lot about the history and culture of the place. It was also nice because it was not crowded so you could ask questions at ease. Maybe I would have liked to stay a bit longer in the Posillipo neighbourhood which I loved, but all in all it was great.
