Step by Step

This guided tour lasts around 3 hours and takes you to the Herculaneum Archaeological Park. Transport is by air-conditioned coach, a means of transport that allows you to travel comfortably and quickly from your hotel in Naples. If you prefer, you can also opt for a pick-up at the city’s port.

Throughout the tour, you’ll have an expert guide at your disposal who will tell you the story of this site buried in the ashes of Vesuvius.

In Roman times, Herculaneum was a summer resort for noble families. Although smaller and less famous than Pompeii, the flow of mud and lava that buried it has perfectly preserved the residences and their contents. Along the route, you’ll see the following places of interest:

  • Casa dei Cervi – This two-storey house features a large terrace overlooking the Bay of Naples. It takes its name from a sculpture in the courtyard depicting a hunting scene with two deer being attacked by dogs.
  • Casa del Bicentenario – The jewel in Herculaneum’s crown. Dating from the Julio-Claudian period (27 BC–68 AD), it is built of yellow tuff and is situated very close to the decumanus maximus, the main street of the Roman city. Several wax tablets were found here , providing valuable insights into many aspects of life at that time. It was discovered during excavations carried out in 1938.
  • Partem Domus Lignea – In Italian, it is known as the ‘Casa del Tramezzo di Legno’ (House with Wooden Partitions) due to the structure separating the atrium from the study. Unlike other residences, it was built in pre-Roman times.

The tour is suitable for most participants and is designed for groups of 40, 18 or 8 people. I recommend you wear comfortable clothing and footwear.
