Step by Step

After the transfer from the harbour to Auke Bay, the captain sets course for the feeding grounds of the humpback whales. It's not long before you hear the characteristic blow and see the huge tail emerge before the deep dive - a breathtaking moment for young and old alike.

As the naturalist explains migratory patterns and bubble feeding techniques, keep your eyes peeled for transient killer whales, sea lions and bald eagles gliding over the fjord. The outside deck offers 360° views, perfect for spectacular photos; if you prefer to take shelter, the air-conditioned cabin has cushioned seating and large windows.

Halfway through the journey, the crew hand out bottled water and a sweet or savoury snack while sharing stories about life on board and the conservation projects that protect these species. The small size of the group makes it easy to ask direct questions and creates a friendly atmosphere.

On the way back, your guide points out the imposing Mendenhall Glacier looming on the horizon, a reminder of the glacial environment that sculpts the region. With your memory card full and your heart beating to the rhythm of the marine giants, you'll disembark with plenty of time to continue exploring Juneau at your leisure.
