Step by Step
The day begins early in the morning with a drive to San Juan de Oriente, a village famous for keeping Chorotega pottery alive. Here, families open the doors of their workshops: you will see how the hand wheel and mineral pigments transform the clay into vessels polished with river stone. You will have the opportunity to try your hand at burnishing and, if you wish, to purchase pieces directly from the master's hands.
Just ten minutes away awaits the Mirador de Catarina, a natural balcony suspended over the Laguna de Apoyo. The cool breeze and the view of the Mombacho volcano in the background invite you to immortalise the postcard before descending towards Masaya, the capital of folklore. In the handicraft market you will find woven hammocks, balsa masks and colourful embroidery, while your guide shares tips on how to bargain respectfully for authentic products.
After lunch (not included), the minibus ascends the slopes of the Masaya Volcano. At the interpretation centre you will learn about the eruptive cycles and the biodiversity that survives the sulphur. A paved path leads effortlessly to the Santiago crater, where the roar and the sulphur fumes are a reminder of the power hidden beneath your feet. The guide points out geological details and colonial anecdotes that earned Masaya the nickname "Boca del Infierno" (Hell's Mouth).
Before returning, a short walk along the scenic trails allows you to observe black iguanas basking in the sun and birds of prey flying over the caldera. Back in the minibus, a last look at the cone confirms the union of culture and nature that defines this 4-in-1 tour.
