Step by Step

The adventure starts at 09:00 h, when the air-conditioned transport picks you up. A winding ascent brings you to the biological station of Mombacho, where the air becomes cooler and more humid. After a brief briefing, you start your hike along sloping trails of volcanic earth: bromeliads, lichens and orchids carpet the trunks, while your guide explains how the fertile soil nourishes the coffee plantations that cover the slopes.

If you're lucky you'll hear the low roar of howler monkeys, the forest's sonorous guardians. Several observation decks offer 360° views: to the south, the turquoise caldera of Lake Apoyo looms; to the north, a mosaic of islands dot the Great Lake Cocibolca and, beyond, the colonial bell towers of Granada come into view.

The route requires moderate fitness: short but strenuous climbs, uneven steps and a humidity that is noticeable. Halfway along the route, the group stops for a light lunch (sandwich, fruit and water) in the shade of a viewpoint, before returning to the trail. Back in the vehicle, a last look at the forested cone of Mombacho confirms the uniqueness of this dormant volcano.

You will arrive back in Granada in the early afternoon, with plenty of time to continue exploring the city or relax by the hotel pool.
