Experience Highlights

Discover the heart of Ancient Rome with this virtual reality tour of the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill – an experience that combines technology and history to help you imagine what the city was like almost 2,000 years ago. Before entering the archaeological site, you’ll enjoy a 45-minute virtual reality experience that recreates the surroundings of the Colosseum, the arena and the Hypogeum.

Afterwards, you’ll continue the tour at your own pace through the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill, with an audio guide included to complete the tour. It’s an ideal option if you want to better understand what you’re seeing and enjoy the monuments without relying on a live guide.

Step by Step

The experience begins next to the Colosseum with a 3D virtual reality simulation based on historical research. For around 45 minutes, you’ll be able to see what the Colosseum square was like in its heyday, with citizens, markets and scenes of everyday life digitally recreated.

Virtual reality will also allow you to view the arena from a gladiator’s perspective before the start of the fights and to virtually explore the Hypogeum, the underground network of passageways, mechanisms and storage areas that made the spectacles possible.

Once this immersive introduction is over, you’ll enter the Colosseum to explore the monument in person and recognise many of the spaces you’ve just seen reconstructed. You can then continue on to the Roman Forum, the city’s ancient political, religious and social centre, amongst temples, arches and monumental ruins.

The tour concludes on the Palatine Hill, one of the sites most closely linked to the origins of Rome and later the residence of emperors and powerful families. The entire tour of the archaeological park is self-guided using an audio guide, so you can stop wherever you like and explore at your own pace.
