Step by Step

With this guided tour of the Colosseum’s Arena and the Roman Forum, you’ll experience Ancient Rome beyond the typical photos taken from the outside. This experience is designed for those who want to understand how the city was organised, where major decisions were made, and what it was like to witness the spectacle in the world’s most famous amphitheatre.

The first part of the tour takes place in the Roman Forum, the true nerve centre of ancient Rome. As you walk amongst temples, triumphal arches and the remains of public buildings, your guide will explain how this space was the political, social and religious heart of the city. You’ll see, amongst other things, the area associated with the Vestal Virgins and come to understand why this valley was the setting where the day-to-day life of the Empire unfolded.

From there, you’ll continue to the Palatine Hill, a green, elevated area traditionally identified as the birthplace of Rome. Over the centuries, it became the favourite residence of the elite and the emperors. From its vantage points, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Forum and the Colosseum, whilst your guide helps you imagine the palaces, gardens and banquets where only monumental ruins remain today.

The final part of the tour is dedicated to the Colosseum, the highlight of the tour. You’ll enter through the so-called Gladiators’ Gate and gain direct access to the arena floor, an area restricted to a limited number of visitors. From there, you’ll be able to see the stands, the amphitheatre’s internal layout and the dungeon area, where gladiators and animals waited for their turn to enter the arena. It offers a unique perspective from which to grasp the scale of the building and the intensity of the fights.

Throughout the experience, your live guide will accompany you with clear and engaging explanations, supported by personal headphones so you don’t miss a single detail, even when the area is very busy. By the end of the tour, you’ll leave with a much more comprehensive understanding of Ancient Rome and how these three sites—the Forum, the Palatine Hill and the Colosseum—were interconnected in the life of the city.

Everything was fine, but it’s important to bring your ID as they check it. The tour itself was very good and the explanations were clear.

One of the most interesting visits on our trip to Rome. The Colosseum from the arena is thrilling, even if you’ve already seen it in photos.

I liked that it didn’t focus solely on the gladiators. It also covered politics, religion and daily life in the Forum – very comprehensive.
