Step by Step

When you reach Raufarhólshellir, you will descend through a narrow, natural mouth that gives access to lava galleries more than 5 km long. At every step you will feel the living history of the eruptions that forged this underground tube thousands of years ago.

Your English-speaking guide, who has extensive experience in practical volcanology, will explain how lava tubes are formed: the dynamics of the outer layer solidifying while the inner layer continues to flow, creating perfect passages for exploration.

In winter, the tunnel is adorned with amazing ice sculptures at its entrance and first metres. These ephemeral formations, sculpted by dripping and freezing, turn the entrance into a natural art gallery, impossible to see anywhere else.

As you go along, you will be able to touch the rough volcanic rock walls, comparing textures and colours, and your guide will show you cracks, olivine crystals and layers of petrified ash. You will be part of a team of field volcanologists for a day.

At the end, you'll emerge into the open air as a true lava cave explorer, with an in-depth knowledge of Icelandic geology and indelible memories of an underground experience.
