Step by Step

Welcome and medieval ascent

Meet your guide on the esplanade of the footbridge and hear how an "island of granite" became a symbol of faith and architectural feat. After crossing the King's Gate, you climb the Grand-Rue flanked by half-timbered taverns and butter biscuit shops.

Between panoramic viewpoints and cobbled alleyways, you will learn about the incredible dance of the tides - the fastest in Europe - and the medieval engineering that made it possible to build walls and buttresses on an 80-metre promontory.

Your guide will lead you to the main entrance of Saint-Michel abbey. Once you have passed through the Gothic nave, you will pass through:

  1. Abbey church: 24 m vaults that resounded with Gregorian chants for centuries.
  2. Hanging cloister: 220 slender arches that seem to float above the sea.
  3. Refectory and monks' hall: Benedictine austerity and a giant hearth that still shows the soot of yesteryear.

In each room, you will discover how the spaces were designed to reflect the spiritual ascent of the pilgrim: from rock to heaven.

The tour concludes on the west terrace, with a postcard-perfect view of the ocean and the marshes dotted with white sheep (pré-salé). Your guide will suggest walking routes around the bay at low tide, taverns where you can try the traditional omelette soufflée and sablé biscuit shops if you want to take a little piece of Normandy with you.
