Step by Step
The adventure begins on the footbridge that crosses the marshes. As you walk along, your guide narrates the apparition of the archangel St Michael to Bishop Aubert in 708 and the miracle that gave rise to the sanctuary.
After passing through the King's Gate, you meander along the Grand-Rue, lined with 15th century brick and timber houses. At each stop you will discover why the tides can rise at the speed of a galloping horse and how the monks transformed the island into an impregnable fortress.
On the Place du Marché you will learn the history of Mère Poulard's famous "omelettes soufflées" and, climbing the Grand Degré staircase, you will enjoy panoramic views over the World Heritage-listed bay. The guide will also point out secret viewpoints for your best photographs, away from the beaten track.
If you have chosen the ticket option, your guide will see you off at the priority ticket office and you will go straight inside with an audio guide. Visit the cloister suspended over the sea, the abbey church in flamboyant Gothic style and the monastic refectory where the Benedictine silence still resounds. You can stay as long as you wish before descending back to the walled village.
