Experience Highlights

Immerse yourself in the unique ecosystem of Clover Pass, just a few kilometres north of Ketchikan, and paddle between rainforest-covered islands where the Tongass National Forest merges with the sea. The adventure begins with pick-up from the cruise ship docks or hotel and a comfortable transfer to the marina, where your guides will equip you with all the necessary gear and go over safety rules before you hit the water. The experience lasts 4 hours in total (2-2.5 hours paddling) and takes place in small groups of maximum 8 people to ensure personalised attention.

During the trip, glide over clear waters as you look for bald eagles, sea lions, colourful starfish and, with luck, humpback whales or migrating killer whales. No previous experience is required: the kayaks are stable, the route is protected and you'll be accompanied by two local nature guides.

  • Book in advance and secure your place in high season.
  • Explore without overcrowding: maximum 8 adventurers per trip.
  • Enjoy a local snack of smoked salmon and drinks during the break.

Step by Step

Your day starts in the heart of Ketchikan, where a private vehicle takes you to the quiet marina of Clover Pass. The ride offers a first glimpse of the temperate rainforest before you meet your guides, who provide rain suits, waistcoats, paddles and waterproof bags to protect your belongings.

Once on the water, the kayak becomes your floating lookout: naturalist guides point out eagle nests, seal backs poking through the waves and colonies of starfish carpeting the volcanic rock. With each paddle, the silence is broken only by the snort of a distant whale or the gentle splash of the paddle.

The 1:6 guide-participant ratio allows for instant answers to questions - from the geology of the islands to the native culture that has inhabited these shores for millennia. When the group reaches a sheltered nook, they stop for locally smoked salmon, vegetable pâtés and hot or cold drinks, all included in the experience.

The second part of the route skirts islets where kelp forests create a green mosaic beneath the surface; at low tide, starfish and anemones appear as a kaleidoscope of colours. The return to port is unhurried, leaving time for a final photo opportunity with the snow-capped peaks in the background.

When you disembark, changing rooms and transport back to the centre or to the cruise ship await you. Taking home a souvenir of paddling in one of Alaska's most pristine environments will be your best souvenir.
