Step by Step

Dar es Salaam, the former capital of Tanzania and the main gateway to East Africa, combines colonial history, contemporary architecture and vibrant city life. This 7-hour tour will allow you to trace its evolution from sultanate times to its transformation into a modern metropolis.

You will start with a pick-up from your hotel or the port and head first to St. Joseph 's Cathedral, erected in 1903 on the site of the city's first mosque. Its imposing white façade contrasts with palm trees and street markets.

Next you'll visit the Bavarian-style Azania Lutheran Church, whose elegant arches and stained-glass windows evoke European and Asian influences. Next, you'll travel back in time to the tribal past at the Village Museum, where you'll walk through replicas of traditional Tanzanian dwellings and watch dance and craft demonstrations.

The tour continues with a dive into the Mwenge Woodcarvers Market, a maze of ebony carvings, and the lively Kivukoni Fish Market, where you can smell and see the city's busiest fish market, a spectacle of colour and marine aromas.

After these traditional markets, you'll visit the National Museum of Tanzania, with exhibits on anthropology, palaeontology and contemporary art. Then you'll explore the bustling Kariakoo Market, a block-long open-air market offering everything from spices to clothing to household appliances.

To close the day, you'll pause at Mlimani City Mall, the country's largest shopping centre, and discover the colourful world of Tingatinga painting at the Tingatinga Arts Cooperative, before returning to your starting point.
