Step by Step
This walking tour focuses on the old town of Palma de Mallorca. An expert guide will explain the history of the city and its most iconic monuments and buildings. As for the duration, you can choose between two options: a 45-minute tour (without entry to the Cathedral) or a 90-minute experience that includes access to the island’s most important cathedral.
The tour usually starts at an easily accessible location such as the Parc de la Mar, a green space a short distance from the Cathedral and sheltered by the remains of the medieval walls. It is famous for its saltwater lake, which symbolises Palma de Mallorca’s connection to the sea.
From here, you can admire the silhouette of the Cathedral, a Gothic gem adorned with a large rose window. Its construction took place following the conquest of the island by the Crown of Aragon in the 13th century. King James I decided to build a grand cathedral after being saved from a shipwreck.
Just a few metres from this great Christian cathedral stands the Palau Reial de l’Almudaina. It is a former Almoravid Muslim fortress that was converted into a Christian palace. Also built in the Gothic style, it has a square floor plan and is divided into several rooms. One of the most important is the Hall of the Kings, which houses portraits of the Mallorcan monarchs and a reconstruction of James I’s helmet with its characteristic dragon-shaped design.
Behind the palace lies the S’Hort del Rei, a beautiful garden with pergolas and fountains. In the past, this small plot was home to orange and lemon trees, aromatic herbs and vegetables. The tour usually ends at the Plaza de Cort, home to the town hall and a majestic, centuries-old olive tree. Please note that the order of the tour may vary.
