Step by Step
The experience begins at the modernist façade of the Palacio Consistorial, a jewel of the early 20th century. The guide will welcome you with a vermouth and the first tapa: a seafood dish with homemade salad and Cantabrian anchovies, the undisputed symbol of the region.
The route continues to the Roman Forum, where you will discover how Carthage Nova was transformed into an imperial city. A freshly fried prawn horse awaits you there, accompanied by a local white muscatel. While you look at the columns and baths, the guide will tell you interesting facts about the ancient Roman banquets.
In the heart of the commercial centre, a century-old inn serves a cantonal salad with pickled tuna, roasted peppers and olive oil from the Sierra Minera. The pairing: a craft beer from Campo de Cartagena that balances the vinegary touch of the dish.
Continuing along Calle Mayor, you enter a blue-tiled bar where they make the classic caldero del Mar Menor; they serve a miniature version with ñora and mild aioli, accompanied by a Monastrell red wine from Jumilla. The guide tells the legend of the fishermen who used to cook this rice in their boats with salt water.
The iconic Asian coffee - strong coffee, condensed milk and Licor 43 - served with a crispy paparajote. Between sips, you'll understand the Arabic imprint on local pastries and get recommendations for further exploration of the Cartagena nightlife.
