Step by Step

The tour begins on the ground floor of the Art Nouveau palace, where sculptures, mosaics and ceramics found during excavation are on display. Interactive panels explain how the theatre, with a seating capacity of over 6,000, was hidden under medieval and baroque dwellings after centuries of abandonment.

You will walk through a glass gallery suspended over the ancient Roman street that connected to the forum. As you gaze at marble columns and Corinthian capitals, the audio guide recreates the hustle and bustle of Carthago Nova's merchants and citizens.

A corridor carved into the rock leads you to the semicircular portico and, suddenly, the imposing cavea opens up before you: 25 rows of tiers of bleachers that adapt to the hill of the Conception. From here you will understand the perfect acoustics designed for tragedies, comedies and imperial speeches.

Take the time to climb up to the upper vomitorium: the views take in the natural harbour, the old cathedral and the Punic-Roman remains that line the bay. On the way down, the route ends at the bookshop, where you will find reproductions of skylights, coins and informative books.
