Step by Step
The Tàpies Museum is situated in the heart of the Eixample district, in one of Barcelona’s earliest Modernist buildings. Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner to house the former Montaner y Simón publishing house, the building combines industrial elements with innovative architecture and becomes a key part of the visit itself.
Founded by Antoni Tàpies to promote an understanding of modern and contemporary art, the museum houses one of the most comprehensive collections of his work. Its exhibitions take visitors on a journey through the different stages of his career and offer an insight into his distinctive artistic language, characterised by the use of textures, symbols and unconventional materials.
The programme is rounded off with temporary exhibitions by Catalan and international artists, creating an ongoing dialogue between Tàpies’ legacy and contemporary art. You can also explore unique spaces such as the library specialising in modern and contemporary art, housed in the publishing house’s former warehouse.
Before you leave, take a moment to admire *Núvol i cadira*, the large sculpture that crowns the building and has become one of the museum’s most recognisable symbols. Its location, close to Casa Batlló, La Pedrera and Passeig de Gràcia, makes this visit the perfect complement to a tour of Modernist Barcelona.
