Step by Step

One of Portugal’s most notable attractions is its cuisine. Pastéis de nata, or pastéis de Belém, are the country’s most iconic traditional sweet treat, and their popularity has spread throughout the world. Whilst enjoying a coffee or a cup of tea during a two-hour class, you’ll learn how to make pastéis de nata like a true professional, as well as another recipe from Portuguese cuisine.

At the end, you’ll be able to sample your culinary masterpiece and share this tasting experience with other food enthusiasts. Take this experience home with you and surprise your loved ones with your sweetest side by putting the skills you’ve learnt during this activity into practice. The class will take place in small groups of approximately 15 people, who will receive guidance from a professional chef.

The recipe is said to have been a secret for almost 200 years, and it’s rumoured that no more than seven people in the whole world know it. This Portuguese delicacy consists of a puff pastry shell, and the custard is made with egg yolks, sugar and milk.

Furthermore, there is a proverb in Portugal: ‘A fiancée who eats a pastel won’t take off her ring’. After the wedding, it is traditional for the bride and groom to stop off to enjoy a delicious pastel de nata. Of course, pastéis de Belém carry a very significant connotation of love, making them perfect for enjoying on a romantic date with your partner.

I didn't quite understand the order of the steps to make this recipe but I had fun participating. Cooking is not my forte, I went to have fun for a while and the truth is I didn't learn much but I really enjoyed the result. I recommend it!

The best thing about Lisbon's pastries are the cream cakes. I didn't want to leave without learning how to make them from the people who live there. I have a pastry shop in my city so now I can offer them and they take them out of my hands! A great success!
