Step by Step
As soon as you cross the entrance, an immersive short film introduces 22 million years of geology, followed by a self-guided walk that winds through tunnels and terraces of golden limestone. Interactive panels explain how the Phoenicians, Romans and Knights of the Order of Malta quarried and carved the blocks with precision craftsmanship.
The itinerary leads to the Museum Hall, where original tools, models of megalithic temples and a 4th century BC Punic tomb excavated from the living rock are on display. Further along, a live stonemasonry demonstration shows how modern carvers keep traditional techniques alive: the echo of the chisel and the smell of freshly cut stone test your senses.
Outside you'll find a tranquil citrus orchard and the petting zoo, home to Maltese goats, peacocks and tortoises. Children can feed the animals while the grown-ups relax in the cafeteria, where refreshments and hot pastizzis are served.
Before leaving, make one last stop at the souvenir shop for carved miniatures, local honey or micronised limestone cosmetics. With your camera full of textures and your mind full of stories, you'll leave Siġġiewi with a new appreciation for the stone that built Malta.
