Step by Step

The Kyoto Railway Museum is a real tribute to the evolution of rail transport in Japan. Located next to JR Umekoji Kyoto-nishi station (a 2-minute walk away), the museum exhibits 54 vehicles that tell the story from the first steps of the railway to the Shinkansen revolution. Among them are the 0 series, the first bullet train, and the 500 series, capable of reaching 300 km/h in commercial service.

As soon as you enter and after exchanging your e-ticket + passport at the Exchange Point (ticket office hours: 10:00 - 17:00, last entry 16:30), you are free to explore the exhibition halls. You will see steam locomotives, classic passenger cars, diesel and electric units, as well as workshop equipment and historical signalling.

One of the most spectacular moments is the Railway Diorama: a 30 × 10 m 1/80 scale model, operated live by museum staff in different sessions throughout the day (approx. 15 min each). Check the timetables for the sessions and don't miss this staging of trains in motion.

You can also visit the Steam Locomotive Service Hangar No. 2, the only one of its kind in Japan, where these steel giants are maintained and overhauled. Please note that due to maintenance work, there may be temporary restrictions on access to this area.

For the little ones, there is a Kids Park with toys and interactive material. And if you want to repeat your favourite part, the museum allows unlimited same-day re-entry - just show your commemorative ticket on re-entry.
