But you should also take a stroll through the streets of this island and enjoy its serene atmosphere for a while. Although it may not seem like it, centuries ago this was the most populated island in the lagoon.

• And a few canals further on - a 5-minute boat ride from Torcello - you have the crowning glory of the trip and the most charming of all the islands: Burano. The little colourful houses floating on the canals will add a touch of colour to the excursion. Legend has it that they were painted like this so that sailors could see them in the distance through the fog. Impossible not to spot them from a distance! What you won't miss here either is the leaning bell tower of St. Martin, even steeper than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. And of course, you'll get to know the lace-making tradition typical of this island.
