Step by Step
Did you know that Venice is built on an archipelago of islands? The Venetian lagoon stretches out over the Adriatic Sea and is made up of 118 islands, the centre of which is the city of canals. But if this one is fascinating, the small surrounding islands will make you fall in love even more - if possible - with the region. Don't know which ones to visit? The answer is easy: Murano, Burano and Torcello. With this half-day excursion you can check off one of the best things to do around the capital of Veneto.
If your next question is whether the four and a half or five hour excursion will give you enough time to see all three islands, the answer is also easy: yes! There are several reasons for this. They are small and very close to each other, in fact, some of the trips will take you no more than 5 minutes. Moreover, they are perfectly connected by multiple canals.
This excursion to Murano, Burano and Torcello includes transfers from Venice and between the islands in a motorboat. You'll cruise the canals in comfort without having to search for a way to get from one to the other. And trust us, the Venetian vaporetti or water taxis, besides being overloaded with tourists, are not cheap or easy to combine. So, keep calm, we've got it all organised!
The natural bay that makes up the Venice lagoon has a lot of history. With the tour guide who will accompany you during the boat trips, you will learn about the history of the monuments of each of the islands, their traditions and the legends of the lagoon. And not only that, he will give you indications so that, once you disembark on the islands, you can enjoy enough free time to see the best of each of these beautiful villages.
Still don't know what the itinerary is? Don't worry, we'll tell you in detail:
- Your first stop is just 20 minutes from Venice: Murano. Famous all over the world for its glass-blowing tradition. The tour includes a visit to a traditional kiln. Watching the glass bubbles form as the master glassblower blows and shapes the glass will mesmerise you. And don't forget to visit the historic centre, especially the cathedral and its Byzantine mosaic.
- Next stop: Torcello. When you arrive on this quiet islet where only 13 people live, you'll think you've travelled back in time. Its high historical and architectural value contrasts with its small size. You can't miss the basilica of Santa María Asunta, the former cathedral, and you can buy your ticket there. But you should also take a stroll through the streets of this island and enjoy its serene atmosphere for a while. Although it may not seem like it, centuries ago this was the most populated island in the lagoon.
- And a few canals further on - a 5-minute boat ride from Torcello - you have the crowning glory of the trip and the most charming of all the islands: Burano. The little colourful houses floating on the canals will add a touch of colour to the excursion. Legend has it that they were painted like this so that sailors could see them in the distance through the fog. Impossible not to spot them from a distance! What you won't miss here either is the leaning bell tower of St. Martin, even steeper than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. And of course, you'll get to know the lace-making tradition typical of this island.
Explore beyond the map of Venice and tour the lagoon with this excursion to the enchanting islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello. Discover the authentic Venetian heart!
