Step by Step
This excursion to Normandy from Paris with tour of the American Cemetery takes you to the main scenes of the D-Day Landings, accompanied by an English-speaking official guide who will help you understand the events of 6 June 1944 on the ground. You will depart at 7:00 am from the centre of Paris in an air-conditioned coach, driving through the Normandy countryside to the coast.
The day begins at the Pointe du Hoc, a strategic point perched high on the cliffs overlooking the English Channel. Here you will learn the story of the American Rangers who climbed these cliffs under enemy fire to attack German positions. Next, you'll visit Omaha Beach, one of the hardest fought beaches, a key part of the Atlantic Wall defences, where on D-Day some of the bloodiest episodes of the operation were fought.
The tour continues at the American Cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer, located on Omaha Beach. Its more than 70 hectares are lined with 9,387 white marble crosses, along with a memorial, a chapel and the Garden of the Missing, a solemn place that pays tribute to the American soldiers who fell during the Battle of Normandy. Later, you will have free time in Arromanches-les-Bains, where you can still see the remains of the artificial harbour "Mulberry", key to the logistical success of the landing, and take the opportunity to have lunch on your own.
The last part of the day will take you to the Juno Beach area, one of the main landing beaches for the Canadian troops on 6 June 1944. Between historical explanations and time to take in the scenery, you'll get a much better idea of the magnitude of the operation and the human sacrifice involved. After approximately 7 hours of sightseeing, you will return by coach to Paris, where you are expected to arrive at around 20:00.
