Step by Step
Combine two of Columbia Icefield 's most iconic experiences in one day trip from the Discovery Centre. First, enter the interpretive centre to learn about the formation of this ancient ice and its environmental significance.
Then, hop aboard the Ice Explorer, a giant wheeled vehicle specially designed to travel on the ice sheet. Your guide will tell you fascinating facts about the geology, climate change and the wildlife that inhabits this extreme environment.
During your tour on the glacier, you will have the opportunity to step on, feel and even drink water directly from the ice. It's a sensory and educational experience that can only be had here. Before or after noon - an ideal time to avoid crowds - you can join the free small-group interpretive tours, which depart every 30 minutes from the Discovery Centre.
After returning to the centre, the shuttle bus will take you to the Glacier SkyWalk, a suspended glass walkway overlooking a 280-metre-deep canyon. At the viewing platform, the panoramic views of waterfalls, fossils and alpine scenery are spectacular. With your audio guide in nine languages, you will discover stories of explorers, local flora and fauna, and the impressive dynamics of the ice field.
The combination of direct contact with the glacier and the adrenaline rush of walking on the abyss make this one of the most complete and exciting tours in the Canadian Rockies. Whether you are travelling as a couple, a family or with a group of friends, this experience will give you unforgettable memories and postcard-perfect photographs.
