Step by Step
The Columbia Icefield Skywalk is much more than a lookout point - it's a sensory experience that puts you literally on the edge of a glacial cliff. From the transparent platform, you can look out over the ice formations of the Sunwapta Valley and feel the vastness of the alpine wilderness beneath your feet.
To access the Skywalk, start at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, a state-of-the-art interpretive centre where you will pick up your audio guide and prepare for your journey. A shuttle bus will take you on a 4-minute ride along the Icefields Parkway, with breathtaking views around every bend.
Once on the Skywalk, the audio guide commentary will accompany you along the walkway, explaining in narrative format the processes of glacier formation, the presence of ancient fossils and wildlife adapted to the extreme climate. You will feel part of the landscape, watching the clouds reflect on the ice.
After the walk, you can return to the Discovery Centre where, if you wish, an interpretive guide offers free tours in small groups every 30 minutes. You will learn anecdotes about the scientific expeditions and pioneers who explored this region.
From beginners to experienced adventurers, the Columbia Icefield Skywalk offers a unique view of the Columbia Icefield, one of the largest icefields in the Rockies, fusing engineering, geology and adventure tourism.
