Step by Step

Discover Arizona from an insider's perspective aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad, a century-old train that travels 20 miles of canyon along the winding course of the Verde River. For 3.5 hours, you'll see a succession of red rock formations, historic bridges and a 7,000-foot tunnel that will transport you back in time to the Old West.

Choose between an air-conditioned vintage wagon or an open platform to feel the desert breeze up close. Before departing, you'll enjoy a light lunch in the depot's cafeteria, with snacks and bottled water, accompanied by a champagne toast to start the route in style.

Along the way, your live guide will point out ancient cave dwellings from the Sinagua culture, the remains of historic mining sites and the chance to spot bald eagles, antelope and other native species that inhabit this region. Every bend in the road offers a new postcard of Arizona's wild beauty.

Before you leave, be sure to visit the John Bell Museum, located at the depot itself, which displays artifacts and photographs that tell the story of the railway and the communities of Clarkdale, Jerome and the Yavapai-Apache Nation. When you reach the return point at Perkinsville Ghost Town, you'll learn about the history of the old mining town, the end point of this journey back in time.

It's a perfect plan for families, couples and nature lovers, combining comfort, history and unforgettable scenery in one tour.
