Step by Step
By purchasing a ticket, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the National World War II Museum in New Orleans , which pays tribute to the American soldiers who took part in the conflict. It opened on 6 June 2000, on the anniversary of the Normandy landings, and features everything a history buff could wish for. The visit is self-guided.
You’ll be able to enter this unmissable museum and watch the introductory video ‘Beyond All Boundaries’, produced by and starring Tom Hanks. Without a doubt, one of the most spectacular rooms is the grand atrium, where dozens of aeroplanes are suspended in mid-air by cables.
There are also Spitfire and Sherman tanks, a perfectly preserved B-29 bomber, tracked vehicles, the four-engine ‘Flying Fortress’ and exhibits showcasing the industrial and logistical effort required to supply the army.
However, this cultural institution is famous for its “Campaigns of Courage” section, which recreates two theatres of war: the Pacific – featuring a spectacular reconstruction of the Guadalcanal jungle – and the campaigns in the Mediterranean and on the European mainland.
Overall, it is designed as an immersive journey combining video, interactive exhibitions, special effects and a rich archive of testimonies from those who took part in the conflict. New Orleans was chosen to host the museum because the amphibious ships used during the Second World War were designed and built here, at the Higgins Industries shipyards.
Add an extra to your ticket and choose the option that includes the 4D film *Beyond All Boundaries*. When you book this experience, the time you select will be the screening time; you can enter the museum at any time before the film starts. If you select the standard ticket, the time you select will be your entry time to the museum.
If you wish, you can refuel after your visit at the museum’s bars and restaurants: The American Sector or the Soda Shop, which recreates a 1950s American diner (please note that food is not included).
