Step by Step

The tour begins in front of the imposing Guardian Building, where your guide explains the legend of an executive whose silhouette still appears in the corridors at ungodly hours. From there, you'll proceed through Campus Martius to the Ford Piquette Factory, home of the first Model T and the scene of rustling and clanging metal when the building is deserted.

Continue along Broadway Avenue to Michigan Central Station, witness of farewells and returns, today converted into a labyrinth of shadows. Beneath the neoclassical structure, you'll hear tales of ghost trains that seem to stop on empty platforms and footsteps that wander the vestibules in the gloom.

The tour continues past the Detroit Opera House, where a 19th-century soprano refuses to leave the theatre after her tragic fall, and culminates at the Book Cadillac Hotel, known for its appearances in the presidential suite. Here, amid the marble reliefs and gilded corridors, the guide shares testimonials from guests who swore they heard piano music at midnight.

Along the route, anecdotes weave in and out of Detroit's urban history, revealing how the ghosts of industry, art and immigration are still present on every corner. The walk concludes in a nearby alley, where one last unexplained event - the street lamp that flickers for no reason - will close the experience with a shudder.

I experienced chills when the guide talked about the street lamp that flickers by itself at the end of the tour. Very good closure.

The Ford Piquette Factory at nightfall gives a feeling of being inside an old horror movie scene.

The minus: traffic noise in some sections made it difficult to hear the guide, but still a very good experience.
