Step by Step

After meeting at your chosen departure point, your little expedition sets off north on the A591, which has been hailed as one of the most beautiful scenic roads in England. Just ten minutes later, the iconic Lake Windermere comes into view, a mirror of water reflecting oak-covered hills and grey stone farmhouses.

The route climbs the meandering Kirkstone Pass, a mountain pass linking the southern valleys to the Ullswater; at the top, a pause to stretch your legs and absorb a silence broken only by the wind. The descent leads to glacier-carved valleys and a string of lakes that change hue with each passing cloud. The guide shells out Viking stories, romantic poems and smugglers' anecdotes as the vehicle strategically stops for photos.

Near Keswick, you'll arrive at the enigmatic Castlerigg Stone Circle, erected 4,500 years ago: here the mountains act as a natural amphitheatre for this 'Stonehenge of the North'. The afternoon continues to Ashness Bridge, a stone arch over a stream that plunges down to Derwentwater; from its cobbled causeway you'll get one of the district's most famous postcards.

The return journey skirts green meadows dotted with flocks and picturesque flagstone walls. Back at the starting point, you will have completed a circuit of 8 lakes and 120 minutes of picture postcard scenery in the comfort of boutique transport and the expert narration of your guide.
