Step by Step
Immerse yourself in the alpine atmosphere of Zermatt as you walk through the Bahnhofplatz, the heart of the town, and discover why the train is the only access route for travellers and goods. Your guide will reveal the beginnings of this village in the shadow of the Matterhorn and its evolution from a simple railway crossing.
You will then stroll along Bahnhofstrasse, Zermatt's most famous shopping street, before turning into less crowded alleyways. On the Gourmetweg, you'll see how the tennis courts turn into a natural ice rink in winter and how modern architecture coexists with centuries-old traditions.
As you enter the Hinterdorfstrasse, the oldest part of the town, you will discover the secrets of flagstone roofs and two-century-old barns. Each building is a silent witness to the rural life that gave birth to the present day. Then, you will learn about the history of the Monte Rosa Hotel, starting point of many expeditions to the Matterhorn and tourist hub since the 19th century.
Your tour continues at the Mountaineers' Cemetery, where those who lost their lives climbing the Matterhorn and nearby peaks are laid to rest. This stop, charged with emotion and respect, will help you understand the link between civilisation and the mountains. From there, you will reach the Kirchbrücke viewpoint, from where the classic photograph is taken with the Matterhorn pyramid in the background.
Finally, you will follow the Uferweg along the Vispa River, past new developments and the Sunnegga cable car station, back to the train station.
If you have selected the additional option, your guide will give you a return ticket for you to climb on your own to Glacier Paradise or Gornergrat, enjoying one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Alps.
