Step by Step

This ticket will allow you to visit the Reina Sofía Art Centre, one of the world’s finest museums of contemporary art. You will have access to the permanent collection, as well as to the temporary exhibitions.

The cultural centre is situated in the heart of the capital, a stone’s throw from Atocha railway station and just a few minutes’ walk from the Prado, Caixa Forum and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums. The Estación del Arte metro station (L1) and the numerous bus routes that stop nearby make it easy to get there from anywhere in the city.

The Reina Sofía is divided into two parts: the older section dates from the 18th century and was formerly Madrid’s General Hospital. The newer section was designed by the British architect Ian Ritchie and opened in the 1990s.

The museum houses numerous masterpieces of contemporary art, the most famous of which is Picasso’s *Guernica *. The work was painted for display at the 1937 Paris International Exhibition, in the midst of the Spanish Civil War, and depicts the bombing of the Basque town of the same name. The artist, who was from Málaga, was deeply moved by this tragic event and produced dozens of sketches before completing the final painting. Many of these are on display at the Reina Sofía Museum.

The cultural institution also houses three important works by Dalí:

  • *The Face of the Great Masturbator* (his most autobiographical work)
  • Girl at the Window: an almost realistic portrait of his sister Anna Maria
  • Portrait of Luís Buñuel: which leans towards realism without entirely abandoning Cubism.

Other notable works include Playing Cards and Dice (Georges Braque), The Musician’s Table(Juan Gris), The Gathering at the Café de Pombo (José Gutiérrez Solana) and The Christ of Blood (Ignacio Zuloaga), although the list could be longer.

An intense and very interesting visit. I found it to be an honest museum, with works that are not always easy to understand but are certainly very powerful.

The section on Juan Gris and Braque really surprised me. I went for Picasso and ended up discovering more.

I enjoyed it, although I ended up feeling a bit tired because I tried to see everything. It’s better to pick and choose and take your time.

A great idea if you’re in the Paseo del Arte area. It’s easy to get to and the museum has a wealth of exhibits.
