Step by Step

Located on the volcanic island of Jeju, the Jeju Marine Animal Museum is a window into the mystery and beauty of the ocean. From the shore to the abyssal depths, this museum brings together species from around the world, with a special emphasis on endemic fauna and collections of scientific and cultural value.

The "Man and the Sea" exhibition invites you to reflect on our age-old relationship with the sea: you will find historical symbols of fish in art, music and film, and learn how various cultures have honoured and lived with marine life.

Experience the excitement of the themed dioramas, which reproduce warm water habitats, coral reefs and intertidal zones where you'll see living fauna and models of fossil crabs, sex-changing fish and toxic species. In the Shark Pavilion you'll compare dozens of sharks, while a special display case recalls freshwater fish linked to Korean tradition.

In addition, the museum dedicates a space to the preservation and sustainable use of marine resources: you will discover how each season of the year influences fishing, seaweed farming and the breeding of various marine animals. A CITES display case shows endangered species and the initiatives to protect them.

I found the exhibition on hermaphrodite fish fascinating, I had not seen it in other museums.
