Step by Step
It is possible to explore Lisbon quickly, comfortably and without missing out on the essentials. See for yourself with this one-hour tuk-tuk tour led by a local guide, stopping at the capital’s most iconic landmarks. You’ll discover Lisbon alongside just your fellow travellers, as this is a private tour.
During the tour, you’ll visit places such as the Alfama neighbourhood. This is one of the oldest districts in the Portuguese capital. Here you’ll find the National Pantheon, a Baroque-style building that serves as a burial place for famous Portuguese figures, and the Portas do Sol viewpoint, from where you can enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Alfama.
You’ll also discover Lisbon’s Praça do Comércio, the city’s nerve centre. The Royal Palace once stood here, but it was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. You’ll be able to admire the Rua Augusta Arch and the equestrian statue of the Portuguese monarch José I, who reigned over Portugal when the earthquake struck.
Lisbon Cathedral will hold no secrets for you either. Also known as the Sé Cathedral, it is one of the few monuments to have survived the various disasters that have ravaged the city. Its construction was completed in the 12th century, and it was built on the site of an ancient mosque.
Praça dos Restauradores is another of the places you can visit. In the centre of the square stands an obelisk, designed by António Tomás da Fonseca, which pays tribute to a key event in Portugal’s history: the independence achieved by the Restauradores in 1640.
You’ll also get the best views of Lisbon from the Mirador da Senhora do Monte. From up there, you can see practically the whole of the capital: St George’s Castle, the Convento do Carmo, the Santa Justa Lift, the whole of the Baixa district, the grand avenues of the Marquês de Pombal area, and so on.
