Step by Step

Enjoy a three-hour private tour led by a local guide, aboard a classic car, through the Nowa Huta neighbourhood.

You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the neighbourhood that was built on the orders of Poland’s former communist government. Did you know that Pope John Paul II celebrated his first Mass here during his first visit to his native Poland as Pope? That was in 1979. Some time before that, when he was Archbishop of Kraków, he also celebrated Christmas Eve Mass there, despite the communist government’s ban.

You’ll visit the Nowa Huta Cultural Centre, situated in the heart of the neighbourhood, which hosts numerous artistic and cultural exhibitions: photography exhibitions, dance performances, theatre productions, workshops, and more.

You’ll also be able to visit the Fundacja Promocji Nowej Huty, the administrative buildings linked to the Lenin Steelworks built in the Nowa Huta district. In fact, this area was originally established as a residential area for the workers of this factory, which you can now visit. A fantastic opportunity to delve into post-war history.

You can also explore the interior and exterior of the Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland, an imposing building with a modern feel, which symbolises the Polish people’s struggle and resistance against the communist government.

One of the most unusual tours we went on in Kraków. History, architecture and a classic car – quite an intriguing combination.

We loved being able to explore Nowa Huta with someone who could explain not only the buildings but also the social context of the era.

The car had that vintage feel we were looking for, although getting in and out several times isn’t exactly convenient. Nothing that spoiled the experience, though.

A very good tour for those interested in 20th-century history. If you’re only looking for Kraków’s classic monuments, this tour takes a different route.
