Enjoy this amazing tour of the mines on an excursion with transport included

You’ll explore the entire Natural Park, with plenty of time to go for walks and see the waterfalls lit up at night. On the way back, you’ll stop off for some shopping at an outlet.

Enjoy a guided group tour for around 35 people. An air-conditioned vehicle will collect you from your hotel in Kraków and take you straight to the Wieliczka Salt Mines. The tour lasts around 4 hours, during which you’ll descend into the depths of the earth to explore chambers, corridors, salt chapels and lakes.

Buying tickets online

Given that this is one of the most popular tourist attractions near Kraków, I believe that buying tickets online for the Wieliczka Salt Mines is the best way to secure entry on your chosen day and avoid the endless queues that form at the ticket offices.

Furthermore, by buying your tickets online, you can book your place on a tour in a language other than Polish or English. As I mentioned earlier, there are very few slots available in other languages, so booking in advance is key to securing tickets in your preferred language if you don’t speak English fluently.

As all tours of the Wieliczka Salt Mines must be taken underground with a guide, to avoid the hassle of sorting out transport, tickets, languages and so on, I recommend simplifying things and booking a guided tour of the Wieliczka Salt Mines where everything is already organised so you don’t have to worry about a thing – just enjoy yourself.

In the post ‘Excursions to the Salt Mines from Kraków’, you’ll find several interesting options that I recommend taking a look at if you want to buy tickets online. Remember that after booking online, you’ll need to contact the provider to confirm the start time of the tour in the language you’ve chosen.

Buying tickets at the ticket office

If you’re planning a trip to Kraków and would like to visit the Wieliczka Salt Mines on your own, the first thing I recommend is checking the opening times to plan your visit and then getting your tickets.

To visit the Wieliczka Salt Mines independently, you can buy tickets at the monument’s ticket office for tours in Polish and English, but if you wish to take this tour in a different language, you will need to purchase them online and well in advance of your travel date, as tours in other languages are limited but in high demand.

Once you have your tickets, you’ll be assigned to a group with which you’ll tour the mines alongside a guide, and although for conservation and safety reasons you won’t be able to explore them entirely at your own pace, the experience is still very exciting and you’ll have a great time on the tour.

The Wieliczka Salt Mines are an amazing place. Who could have imagined that the bowels of the Earth would harbour such a place?

Just looking at the photos of the interior makes you want to go and explore the depths of the mine, Indiana Jones-style, but those of you who wish to venture into the Wieliczka Salt Mines to explore them at your own pace should be aware that, for conservation and safety reasons, you will always be accompanied by a professional guide from the site itself throughout the tour.

This might sound a bit of a killjoy, but nothing could be further from the truth. The guides know lots of stories and interesting facts about the mines that make the visit an even more enjoyable experience.

Furthermore, we must bear in mind that the tour route runs 135 metres underground through 3.5 kilometres of labyrinthine galleries and chambers with underground lakes, so moving through the dim light in the depths of the earth with a guide who knows how to find their way back and has first-aid and safety knowledge always provides greater peace of mind.

Should you feel claustrophobic in any section of the route that is a little more enclosed, they have a protocol in place to support and assist you. So don’t worry, everything will go perfectly and it will be an unforgettable experience!

Along the way, you’ll see stunning sights that will exceed all your expectations. The tour of the Wieliczka Salt Mines begins at the Danilowicz Shaft, and from there you descend from the first level to the third through various galleries leading to chambers such as the Copernicus Chamber (named after one of the mines’ first visitors), the Saint Barbara Chamber (patron saint of miners), the Kazimierz Chamber (named after an important Polish king), the Weimar Chamber (featuring a small illuminated lake) or the Chapel of the Cross, amongst many others.

Of all these , St Kinga’s Chapel is, in my opinion, the jewel of the Wieliczka Salt Mines. It is worth the visit just to see this chamber. It is a very special place, more than 100 metres underground, decorated with beautiful lamps hanging from the ceiling, statues and reliefs depicting the life of Christ. It is a place with a truly unique atmosphere! It really catches the eye.

Whether you visit the Wieliczka Salt Mines on your own or as part of an organised tour, the guided tour inside the site lasts around 2 hours and can be extended to 3 hours if you include a visit to the underground exhibition at the Kraków Saltworks Museum.

Some people might find it a long visit, but to be honest, it’s not an activity that feels too tedious because the route is fascinating and you have a great time during the tour. After all, you don’t often get the chance to enter a real mine as artistic as this one, which is still in operation and is also one of the oldest and largest in the world.

If you’re planning a trip to Kraków, in the article ‘How long do the Salt Mine tours last? ’ I explain in detail how much time you’ll need to see the site so you can better plan the rest of your day’s activities.
