Step by Step

The Kanmon Strait Museum is a cultural gem that pays homage to one of Japan's most important sea passages. Reopened in 2019 after a complete renovation, this modern museum offers not only history, but also breathtaking views and digital experiences for all ages.

Your tour begins on the fourth-floor promenade deck, inspired by the luxurious lounges of 20th-century cruise ships. Relax on the sofas as you watch the ships pass through the strait, or explore the photographic exhibits of ships and travellers of the past. From here you enter the Straits Atrium, where a giant curved screen projects spectacular audiovisual presentations.

The Straits History Gallery on the third floor relives legends, battles and famous visits through intricate dioramas created by artists from Japan and the Czech Republic. Figures such as the samurai Miyamoto Musashi, the monk Kūkai and the Empress Jingū come to life amid detailed recreations and multilingual explanations.

For the more curious, the Interactive Learning Zone on the first floor allows you to try simulations such as operating harbour cranes, deep-sea diving or identifying ships in real time from the museum windows. Ideal for children and adults who enjoy hands-on learning.

Finally, don't miss a stroll down Retro Lane, a nostalgic reconstruction of Moji Harbour between 1890 and 1920. Walk through cobbled streets, vintage shops and a replica tramway, and discover the curious historical archive of the banana trade that shaped the port's identity.

Excellent cultural experience: it combines history, interactive techniques and a very careful staging.

I would have liked the Retro Lane area to have more shops or small stalls to buy something typical.

The café/observation lounge is ideal for a break between exhibitions; excellent for those who don't just go for the history.
