Step by Step

The Trevi Fountain is much more than a baroque monument to throw coins into: it is the visible top of a 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct that still provides water to the city today. On this express guided tour, you will start right in front of Via del Lavatore 49, next to the entrance of the church, where your guide will welcome you and hand you the headphones that will make it easier to listen to every explanation.

You will then admire the mythological and sculptural details of the fountain, learning the symbolism of its figures and the story of its creator before descending through a passageway to the newly excavated underground domus. There, nine metres underground, you will walk over the original foundations and get a close-up view of the only functioning ancient aqueduct.

As you make your way through the archaeological site, your guide will tell you about urban stratification, how Rome was built on its own remains and anecdotes such as the tradition of coin tossing: three coins, three wishes... and how it all began. Each step reveals layers of history that are rarely accessible to the average tourist.

Finally, you will return to the surface with another look at the Trevi Fountain, contemplating it with new eyes and having connected legend and engineering in a compact but intense tour.

Time permitting, your guide will also share personalised recommendations for further exploration of Rome's historic centre on your own: from nearby cafes to other ancient remains barely visible beneath the streets.
