Entering St Peter’s Basilica is to step into one of the most impressive spaces in the Vatican. Its size, its marble, its mosaics and the scale of its works make the visit an experience that goes far beyond simply viewing a church.

With the audio guide, you can explore the interior at your own pace, pausing to admire works such as Michelangelo’s Pietà or Bernini’s monumental Baldachin. You can also get up close to the Papal Altar, discover the tombs of various Popes and notice details that might easily go unnoticed without an explanation.

The tour is self-guided, so you set the pace. You can spend more time on the works that interest you most, wander through the naves at your leisure and let the architecture gradually reveal the sheer magnitude of the space.

If you choose the option with access to the Dome, the experience takes on a whole new dimension. The lift will take you up to the first level, from where you can admire the interior of the Basilica from a bird’s-eye view and look out over St Peter’s Square.

Those who wish to go even higher can continue on foot up the stairs to the top of the Dome. The effort is well worth it: from there, a spectacular panoramic view of Rome and Vatican City unfolds before you.

    An hour well spent inside the basilica, although with the dome we ended up spending considerably more time exploring the whole complex.

    I particularly enjoyed being able to listen to the explanations in Spanish and decide when to pause them so I could take my time looking around.

    The upper section of the dome can be a bit stifling because it’s narrow. If you can cope with that, the views are fantastic.
