Step by Step

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the most imposing and ancient temples in Rome. This audio-guided tour allows you to explore it at your own pace, discovering its secrets and its central role in Marian devotion since the 5th century.

According to tradition, it was built after a dream of Pope Liberius in which the Virgin Mary indicated the place where the sanctuary should be erected. The following day, snow miraculously fell miraculously in the middle of August on Mount Esquilino, marking the exact spot where the church was to be erected.

Throughout the tour, the audio guide will take you through its striking early Christian mosaics that narrate passages from the Old Testament and the infancy of Jesus. You will also learn about the symbolic importance of the High Altar and the papal tombs housed in the church.

One of the most special moments of the tour is the visit to the Holy Cradle, a relic which, according to tradition, contains fragments of the manger where Jesus was born. This jewel is located in the crypt under the altar and is one of the places most venerated by the faithful.
