Step by Step

The Ravenna Pass offers you a unique itinerary through the Byzantine treasures of Ravenna. With a choice of three monuments, you will start at the Basilica of San Vitale, a 6th century octagonal building famous for its mosaics depicting scenes from the Old Testament and the imperial portraits of Justinian I and Empress Theodora. Each tesserae glows in the sunlight, creating a spectacle of colour that transports the visitor to the heart of the Byzantine Empire.

You will continue to the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, erected by the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great. There you will discover the oldest cycle of mosaics on the life of Christ, restored after the First World War and originally darkened by Pope Gregory the Great to encourage prayer. The cohesion between sober architecture and colourful art makes this temple a discreet but essential jewel.

The Archbishop's Museum, with its Chapel of St. Andrew inside, reveals another chapter of Ravenna's religious history. Known as the 'hidden pearl', the chapel contains epigraphs, the cathedral treasury and the ivory throne of Bishop Maximian, as well as mosaics illustrating the internal division of the early Empire.

If you opt for the five-monument version, you will add a visit to the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, a 5th-century funerary building famous for its star-shaped mosaic dome. The Neonian Battistero, where Bishop Neon completed the decoration of its dome with baptismal scenes that have survived almost unchanged.

Thanks to the pass, you can take your time at each site: contemplate the details of the mosaics, listen to the audio guides (in the languages available) and appreciate the sacred silence of these thousand-year-old temples.
