Step by Step
Discover one of the wonders of the Renaissance with this access to the Cathedral and tickets for Brunelleschi’s Dome. Book your access to the marvellous dome in advance with these passes, which are valid for 3 consecutive calendar days, to explore the interior and enjoy spectacular views of Florence. You’ll also be able to include the Baptistery, Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo and the Church of Santa Reparata in this comprehensive experience .
Florence Cathedral is dedicated to Santa Maria del Fiore and is a masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture. The church was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio (1245–1302), who considerably expanded the existing religious structure. Completed around 1367, the cathedral was entirely clad in coloured marble, just like the earlier Baptistery, except for the façade, which remained unfinished and was not completed until the 19th century.
Its interior houses some very important works of art. Firstly, there are the first two detached frescoes depicting the condottiero Giovanni Acuto and Niccolò da Tolentino, painted respectively by Paolo Uccello in 1436 and by Andrea del Castagno in 1456. Paolo Uccello also painted the fresco on the interior wall, depicting four vigorous heads of saints.
As well as its spectacular interior, you can climb 463 steps to reach Brunelleschi’s dome. It became the largest in the world following the fall of the Roman Empire and is still considered the largest ever built using masonry. Both structures were designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the 1980s.
Other monuments you can visit with these tickets include:
- Giotto’s Bell Tower: the bell tower is an excellent example of 14th-century Florentine Gothic architecture. You’ll need to climb 414 steps, but the panoramic views of Florence are undoubtedly the highlight
- The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo: a total of 6,000 square metres divided into 28 rooms spread over three floors. It is a museum within a museum, an unrivalled blend of faith, art and history
- The Church of Santa Reparata: one of the earliest places of worship for Christians in Florence, whose crypt still remains, as Florence Cathedral was built on the foundations of this ancient basilica
