Step by Step
Get ready to enter the jewel of French Gothic architecture: the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. You will start with a brief introduction to the founding of the temple in the 12th century, its role in the religious and civil life of the city and the successive architectural modifications until the great fire of April 2019.
Enter through a reserved entrance without queuing, avoiding the crowds and going straight inside. There you will see the ribbed vaults, the fine stonework of the flying buttresses and the gleaming stained glass windows that have illuminated the sanctuary for centuries.
Your English-speaking guide will explain every detail of the western façade, from the carved doorways with biblical scenes to the kings' gallery. You will learn to recognise the innovations of master builder Pierre de Montreuil and the symbols hidden in the stonework.
Inside, you will walk through the central nave and stop in front of the north rose window, whose stained glass windows narrate passages from the Old Testament. Learn about the restoration techniques used today to restore its splendour and how it is planned to be reopened to the public.
You will finish in the archaeological crypt, where the remains of the medieval walls of Lutetia lie, and receive recommendations for further exploration of the Île de la Cité on your own.
