Step by Step

As you cross the glassed-in foyer, a giant diorama recreates the Battle of Trafalgar with light and sound effects that transport you to the heat of battle. The audio guide takes you on the deck of the Bucentaure, recounting the naval manoeuvres and strategies that shaped the history of Europe.

Continue to the Galerie des Explorateurs, where bronze sextants, nautical charts and a 1715 globe recount scientific voyages to the ends of the earth. An immersive room projects Jean-Baptiste Charcot's polar odyssey at 180°; you will feel the ice crunch under your feet thanks to a vibrating floor.

In the Technologies et Futur section, 1:10 scale models of nuclear submarines and the real rudder of the aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" demonstrate the evolution of French naval engineering. A number of interactive modules allow you to steer a submarine drone or design your own sailboat on a touchscreen.

Before you finish, stop at the terrasse panoramique: the large window frames the Eiffel Tower overlooking the Seine, a perfect backdrop for the final photo. The museum shop offers reproductions of historical cartography, nautical-style brass coffee pots and French cotton sailor scarves.
