Step by Step
The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is situated on St George’s Island, very close to the centre of Calgary, and offers a tour of different ecosystems without leaving the city. Its areas are organised so that you can move from one region of the world to another as you make your way through the grounds.
In Destination Africa, you can get up close to some of the African continent’s most iconic species, whilst Wild Canada focuses on animals native to the country and the landscapes that form part of their natural habitat.
Another of the most popular areas is Penguin Plunge, dedicated to penguins. In the refurbished Explore Asia, you’ll find species such as red pandas, snow leopards and Sichuan takins, as well as other animals from the Asian continent.
The visit also offers the chance to meet the zoo’s polar bears and explore all the indoor and outdoor habitats open during the day. Added to this are family-friendly attractions such as musical performances by the Wilder Bunch and the Wildlife Carousel.
Beyond the visit itself, the zoo is part of the Wilder Institute and carries out conservation projects both in Canada and elsewhere in the world, so the experience combines leisure, education and species conservation.

- XX.I liked that there was plenty to see even if some of the animals were resting or hiding.
- WW.Some areas were quite crowded and it was difficult to see properly at first, but waiting a little while sorted it out.
