Experience Highlights

Trade urban hustle and bustle for rainforest on a cave tubing tour from Belize City with Creole lunch included. An English-speaking driver-guide (Spanish on request) picks you up from your hotel or the cruise terminal and, after just over an hour on the scenic road, you arrive at the heart of the Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve. There you're kitted out with a waistcoat, helmet and headlamp before embarking on a 20-minute hike to the underground river where the adventure begins.

  • Book in advance and forget the logistics of transport and entrance fees.
  • Float among stalactites and sacred chambers of the Mayan civilisation.
  • Savour a typical junglelunch to recharge your batteries

Step by Step

The day starts with a comfortable drive along the George Price Highway, flanked by cocoa plantations and giant ceiba forests; the guide reels off legends about Xibalba, the Mayan underworld. When you reach the park, you swap tarmac for trail: the sound of toucans and streams guides your steps over roots and vine bridges to the entrance of the first cavern. The water is so clear that it reflects the limestone vault like a mirror, and you only have to let yourself drift to feel the temperature drop a few degrees.

Already on your tyre, linked to your companions, you turn off the headlamp for a few seconds and the river becomes a corridor of absolute darkness: you can only hear the echo of ancient drops carving travertine columns. Suddenly the guide turns on her light and reveals a panel of stalactites that hang like crystal fangs above your head; she explains that obsidian offerings destined for the rain gods were found there.

After almost an hour of descent interspersed with short internal walks, the cave leads into a jungle clearing where a steaming lunch of stewed chicken, rice and beans and fried plantain awaits. Eating under the shade of mountain almond trees while howler monkeys mark territory is an integral part of the experience.

The return to the starting point is by air-conditioned vehicle; on the way back to town, your guide summarises the importance of the karst systems to Belize's water supply and shares anecdotes about the local wildlife - if you're paying attention, you might spot coatis or iguanas sunning themselves on the verges. In less than six hours you'll have gone from the colonial avenues of Belize City to navigating an underground cathedral that the ancient Maya considered the gateway to another dimension.
