Step by Step

Immerse yourself in Ghent's medieval era as you stroll across St Michael's Bridge, the ideal starting point to admire its three imposing towers and understand the city's role as a trading power in Northern Europe.

From there you will enter the banks of the Graslei and the Korenlei, old quayside streets where granaries and guild houses tell stories of merchants, spices and navigation on the river Lys.

Continue to Het Groot Vleeshuis, the former Butchers' Hall, and then up to the Gravensteen, the castle of the Counts of Flanders, perfectly preserved in the heart of the city centre and steeped in legends and battles.

At the St. Veerleplein you will discover its duality between life and death, and the House of Alijn, a medieval hospital that reveals the evolution of social care in Ghent.

The tour continues to the Vrijdagmarkt, with its emblematic statue, and the Werregarenstraat, the famous "graffiti alley" designated for urban artists. You will end at St. Bavo's Cathedral and the bell tower (Belfort), a former prison and symbol of independence, and close with the Church of St. Nicholas, a Romanesque jewel that guards the legend of its patron saint.
